Oyster Mushrooms, Red Worms, and Duckweed, Oh My!

In this video, I introduce:

  • Oyster Mushrooms are a relatively low-effort, decently nutritious, immune-boosting fungi!
  • Red worms are awesome producers of worm castings/compost.
  • Duckweed is a high-protein, mini lettuce-like plant that grows atop slow moving water and can be used to supplement fish diets (up to 20%). Soldier larvae (up to 50%) are another option–likely coming to the farm soon!

Although I mention in the video that I might not make mushrooms in the future, I don’t regret learning how to do so. There are many cool applications for fungi, from medicinal to remediative, and on balance, they are relatively low-effort after setting up the medium & inoculating.

Also in this video, IAF works on establishing more of the well-understood processes that cycle energy through our systems:

  • Starting a red worm bin to turn scraps into worm castings and liquid fertilizer for potted plants
  • Receiving duckweed, and setting it up to start producing an initial population to then pull from and supplement fish diet. They love it, and it feels healthy to add living foods into their diet. Goldfish are omnivores after all!
  • Considering black solider larvae also, to turn even more scraps into a tiny bit of compost and a lot of larvae, which can also be used for fish food
  • And a crazy cold front & rain rolls through Northern California, dumping rain on the central valley (including Oroville)

  • USDA Wheat DERAILED 25% – Start Growing Today!

We are seeing massive crop losses across the world due to the Grand Solar Minimum — ideally, we have alternative systems in place to produce food for our families and communities BEFORE the system collapses completely. What is happening now is historically what happens before famine.

Are you taking responsibility for your family thriving in the times ahead?

Moringa @ 2 weeks / Lil Aquaponics Blues

A quick view of the Moringa Oleifera starts at two weeks, roughly 6-8″ (fresh potting soil), and one in “less fresh” potting soil that is 4″. Also, an ammonia spike inspires discussion of the frustrations of running a small (50gal) aquaponics system.

The State is a Threat to Your Food Security

We need multiple, redundant sources of food to ensure our food security. Evidencing this, following the Oregon Organic Standoff last month, a city in Australia has taken the step of DESTROYING 11 city blocks of productive food forest — 7 years of effort invested — that was providing fresh fruit and greens to over 200 people. The state is NOT here to ensure our food; only we can step up and take responsibility for the food security of our families and communities.

IAF: A Call to Spread Awareness

IAF issues a sincere call to spread awareness of the Grand Solar Minimum we have entered and the importance of GROWING YOUR OWN FOOD, and, in sharing the message, building stronger, self-sufficient communities to thrive in the times ahead.

“Survival seed packs” do a disservice by implying a sense of food security, when in fact, it is the knowledge of how to grow food, save seeds for next year, and share this knowledge with a growing, self-sufficient community. IAF explores how to meet the most basic of human needs in a bottom-up (individual) model, without the state to provide for you.

Green String Farm: On Constant Reinvestment

I visit the Green String Farm, home of the Green String Institute, known for its sustainable farming practices. One of their mottos is “50% for people, 50% for nature.” At any one time, half of the farm is dedicated to restoring/improving/building its soil and productive processes, while the other half is actually producing for people. Clearly these aren’t entirely mutually exclusive, but it’s a guiding principal.

Ice Age Farmer discusses the application of this principle both to one’s own self-sufficiency in the coming Grand Solar Minimum, underscoring the need to constantly reinvest in ones own property and processes (and learning!), but also to the 50%/50% balance many of us must currently strike between maintaining a life in the current paradigm while preparing simultaneously to thrive in the changing times.

    Go the Distance

My aquaponics came undone yesterday, though fortunately I was immediately nearby and came to the rescue. This underscored for me, however, the importance of following through on projects. — ARE YOU FOLLOWING THROUGH ON YOUR FAMILY’S FOOD SECURITY?

Much good work is lost for the lack of a little more.
